Golden Gate Bridge

Historically called "the bridge that couldn't be built," The Golden Gate Bridge is the symbol and most recognizable landmark in San Francisco. Following year of public demand for a connection between the San Francisco metropolis to its neighbors in Marin county across the bay, Chicago engineer Joseph Strauss was hired and submitted his sketches in 1921 and construction commenced in January 1933 amid the Great Depression. Workers were subject to hazardous conditions including high winds while suspending in the air and freezing waters – 11 men lost their lives working on the construction on the 1.7 mile long suspension bridge. Completed in spring of 1937, President Roosevelt announced that the bridge was open to cars and the rest of the world via White House telegraph.

It was considered the longest suspension bridge in the world until 1981 and its 746-foot towers made it the tallest bridge of any type until 1993. It is easily recognized around the globe due in part to it's iconic orange-red coloring, called "International Orange". There are countless places around the Bay Area to catch a stunning view of the bridge, and we time our Sunset Segway Tour just right, so you can enjoy the bridge in all its glory as the sun begins to set from a waterfront stop on the tour.
