  • Expand/Collapse General FAQs
    • Expand/Collapse Where do I go for my tour?

All of our tours meet beside the main entrance of the TV Tower. We gather there for a short intro before grabbing the bikes at our shop just around the corner.  Our guides are always there along with a big, red flag 15 minutes prior to each tour.  You won't have any trouble finding them!  If you want to pick up some water or use the restroom before the tour, just pop into our shop right around the corner.

    • Expand/Collapse How do we find your office?

Our shop is directly under the giant TV Tower in Alexanderplatz. If you’re coming from the Alexanderplatz train station (U-Bahn and S-Bahn), just exit on the side with the giant tower.  As you look at the entrance to the TV Tower,  we’re around the right-hand corner, near the Subway sandwiches shop and behind the Asian food restaurant.  Don't worry- it's easy!  You will see our large A-frame signs straight away!

    • Expand/Collapse What are the seasonal open dates of Fat Tire Bike Tours?

From March 1st until November 30th we are open daily from 9:30am. While we are normally open until 6pm every day, we have extended hours from May 1st through September 30th, when we stay open until 8pm. From December 1st until Feb 28th we are open Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays as well as when the weather is nice.  Our Zoo location in the West closes for the season on 31 October.

    • Expand/Collapse Are reservations required for the tours?

We recommend reservations for all of our tours.  We are happy to accommodate walk-up and last-minute bookings as space is usually available, but do recommend reserving your space in advance so that you are not left out.  In particular, our Segway Tours tend to fill up early as space is extremely limited.  Private tours should also be booked as far in advance as possible.

If you need help with reservations, or planning your visit, don’t hesitate to contact us.  TIP: We have a 72-hour cancellation policy so you can make your reservations without worry.

    • Expand/Collapse What if I want to do more than one tour?

Our tours are great compliments to each other, and many of our guests join us for several tours.  Our topic tours are offered on alternating days so you can jump on as many as you would like.  Our Evening Food Tour is a great activity for the evening, too.  For example, you might want to join us for our All-in-One Tour on your first day in Berlin, then our Berlin Wall & Cold War Tour the next, followed by an evening on E-Bikes where you also get to sample food at great restaurants.  There are many ways to fit our tours together so you get as much out of your visit to Berlin as possible, all with the same great Fat Tire Team.

TIP:  Once you have done one of our Bike or E-Bike tours, you are one of the family!  You receive a 8 Euro discount on any additional bike or E-Bike tour you do, so it's a great deal!  Take advantage of this great savings by booking a Package Deal, or Just enter the coupon code found on your confirmation when reserving additional tours.  Don't worry; we will remind you when you check out!

    • Expand/Collapse Are the tours cancelled in case of rain?

No, our tours run rain or shine. We have ponchos available for anyone that needs them in our office. Always a good tip: Bring extra clothes in case it rains, or gets chilly.  There is a luggage room in our shop where you can leave items during your tour, and there is also a luggage rack on all of our bikes should you want to take that extra layer with you.

    • Expand/Collapse Do we go inside the museums and monuments?

We cannot enter the monuments because German law restricts museum guides to their authorized officials. Plus, some people would want to spend only ten minutes in the museum while others would prefer 3 hours.

You will, however, have time to walk around some of the most important highlights at your discretion. For instance, on the Day City Tour we provide time to explore Checkpoint Charlie, on the Berlin Wall Tour you can peruse the Eastside Gallery at your leisure, and on the Third Reich Tour you’re given time to investigate the July 20th, 1944 Memorial. On the Potsdam Tour we do go into the Cecilienhof Palace because this was such a significant building during various parts of Berlin’s history. Your entry and audio guide are included in the tour price! (EUR 6 savings).

TIP: Should you want to keep your bike after your tour, and many people do, you get a discount on your rental!  Your guide, and our shop staff, will be happy to show you exactly how to go back to any sites you would like to explore further or of which you would like to visit the interior.

    • Expand/Collapse What is your cancellation policy?

We offer 100% refunds on all tours if the reservation is canceled more than 72 hours (3 days) before the scheduled tour. We do not offer refunds once we are within 72 hours of the scheduled tour.

  • Expand/Collapse Segway Tour FAQs
    • Expand/Collapse What is a Segway?

The SegwayTM Human Transporter is the first of its kind-a self-balancing, personal transportation device designed to go anywhere people do. Easy to use and operate, the two-wheeled Segway sports high-tech gyroscopes that automatically respond to your body’s movements, “sensing” when it should speed up and slow down.

You stand on a small platform between left and right wheels as you hold onto handlebars at a comfortable waist height. The Segway handles the balancing for you, so that you’re always upright as you glide through any environment.

You may also visit Segway LLC’s site for more detailed info.

    • Expand/Collapse How many people take part in the Segway tours?

Our tours are very popular, and for good reason.  We highly recommend reservations for all of our tours, but are happy to accommodate walk-ups as space is often available.  To make sure our tours are fun, safe, and a great experience for everyone, we have extra guides on hand should we need to split larger groups.

    • Expand/Collapse Are Fat Tire Segway Tours appropriate for children?

Basically, no.  Riding Segways in Germany come with a few restrictions:

      • Each participant must have a valid driver's license and have that license with them on tour (provisional and “leaner’s permits” unfortunately don’t work).
      • Each participant must weigh between 100 lbs (45 kgs) and 255 lbs (117kgs).
      • Participants must be at least 15 years old.
      • Women who are pregnant should not ride Segways.
      • We have a strict policy against alcohol consumption and Segway operation. Alcohol is forbidden on all Segway tours and any client suspected of drinking before or during a Segway tour will immediately forfeit their tour and no refund will be given.

    • Expand/Collapse How far in advance do I need to reserve?

Occasionally we do have space available should you call the morning of your desired tour. This, however, is rare and we suggest you reserve as far ahead of time as possible. We tend to fill all of our tours.

    • Expand/Collapse How long do the Segway tours last? What if I can’t take part in the whole tour because of a previous engagement?

Our Classic Segway Tour and our Berlin Wall Segway Tour each last about 3 hours, including a short training session at the start of the tour.  As you will need to stay with your guide while on Segways, it is not possible to leave the tour early.

    • Expand/Collapse Is there a damage deposit for the Segway tour?

While no deposit is taken before tour, you will need to fill out a fast disclaimer and damage waiver form before joining tour.

    • Expand/Collapse Can I rent a Segway without a guide?

Unfortunately, we cannot rent our Segways out to individuals without a guide. Since our tours are virtually always full, we need all machines for our tour customers.

  • Expand/Collapse Bike Rental FAQs
    • Expand/Collapse Are the bikes easy to use, even if I haven’t cycled in a while?

Oh yes.  We have easy-to-use and comfortable city-style and cruiser-style bikes.  You will feel safe and secure not to mention comfortable when riding around.

    • Expand/Collapse What if I want to keep the bike longer, or can’t make it back on time?

Don’t sweat.  Our customers frequently keep their bikes longer than expected because they are so much fun to ride in Berlin.  If you keep your bike longer than you rented, just come back when you are done and you can pay the remainder of any extra rental time when you get back- no need to do anything more.  Please note our shop times so that you know we are open when you do come back.

    • Expand/Collapse Should I reserve a bike in advance?

We recommend it.  While we usually have bikes available for walk-up customers, we often times do sell out.  Each of our bikes can be reserved in advance online, and we highly recommend that you reserve your bike or bikes in advance.  If you don’t have a reservation, don’t worry- just come by one of our shops where we are usually able to rent remaining bikes on a first-come-first-serve basis.

    • Expand/Collapse Will my pants get dirty when they touch the chain?

No, our bikes have chain guards so your pants won’t come in contact with the chain at all.

    • Expand/Collapse Do you have baskets on the bikes?

All of our bikes have a luggage rack on the back, and we have straps in our shop for you to use.  IF you are carrying something like extra coats or small items, this will be perfect for you.  We have a luggage room free of charge if you would like to leave larger bags with us while you cycle.

    • Expand/Collapse Is biking in Berlin safe?

Yes, and it really is the best way to see the city.  Bike lanes are all over the place, and if not, just ride in the street like a local- you will make lots of cycling friends!

    • Expand/Collapse How do I lock up the bike?

Included with your rental is a cable lock that you can use to lock your bike securely, even if you are keeping it overnight.  Our adult bikes also come with frame locks as well, so you will be very safe and secure.  We will show you how everything works when you pick up your bike.

    • Expand/Collapse What happens if I get a flat?

Flats, while rare, do happen.  With any bike sometimes things break, so we will get you back up and running as quickly as possible.  If you aren’t near our shop, just bring your bike back on the train, just remember to validate a bike ticket for the fare.  We will reimburse this to you when you get back.

    • Expand/Collapse Are all bikes available at both locations?

Our cruiser- and city-style bikes as well as E-Bikes and kid’s equipment is available at both of our Berlin locations.  Additionally, we have trekking bikes available at our Zoologischer Garten location.
